Family

Scott’s Mom, Edna came for a couple of days to visit us and check out what we have going on.  She is such a treat to have around because she helps out and even if it is the smallest thing, it is such a pleasure to have her here.

Sometimes we forget to say thank you or show our appreciation and I think it is important to express our thoughts and feelings.  If I don’t say it enough or express it just the right way, I want everyone who comes across our paths, we surely do appreciate you.  We have been welcomed in our community with open arms and have made some lasting friendships.  It is a great feeling to know that you have entrusted our business into your lives and hearts and allowed us the opportunity to prosper in our community.

We have some open dinner invitations we need to take our new friends up on and soon we will.  Here is to good friends and getting on with things.

BRRR to mmm…warm

I got the greenhouse up to about 84 degrees today before opening the vents to let the warm air escape. About this time of day, I start closing up the greenhouse to capture all the warm air I can to keep it warmer longer without using the propane heat (using the sun to heat is an excellent choice).

Anyway, the sun is a beautiful site and we were very happy with all the rain the last few days and it didn’t stop our customers from coming by. Thanks.

Now I need to get out there and check on the plants and see what needs a drink of water!

Getting cooler

The weather changed again today, a lot colder than a couple of days ago. What a roller coaster week in weather it has been. So, before it gets too much colder it is time to get your flower beds ready for winter.

Fall is the perfect time to plant and fill in spots. Pansies & dianthus need a little bit of time to get used to the cold weather before it sets in. Fertilize and mulch your plants. Use a slow release fertilizer and one that is a low fertilizer like 3-4-4 and not 20-20-20 (produces top growth and not feeder roots). Mulching is important to keep moisture in and not allow the roots to freeze. No mulch around the plants exposes the roots to death. Mulch is most important going into winter.

Deadhead or not to deadhead? That is the question. What do you do? I prefer to leave most perennials in tact for winter for winter interest and for feeding the birds. It does make for some work in spring.

Happy Friday

Today should be a beautiful day. Lots of sunshine, and maybe a bit of rain this evening. I am preparing for the Think Spring, Think Bulbs Seminar for tomorrow, 10/10 at 10 am. I almost had a panic attack when the newscaster on the radio said “Friday, October 8th…”, panic set in thinking how I was going to fix this disaster and I looked at my phone and realized they were wrong and all was well with the world, again.

Hope everyone has a great day & come on by the garden center for some fabulous info & plant material!! The mums are big and gorgeous!! Great price, too.

Bulb display

I am getting the bulb display together to be self explanatory. Hopefully this is the best way to do it. Our source doesn’t do retail, only bulk wholesale – they are so great that I would rather buy from them this way than buy already prepackaged from other sources. So, I have taken the shipping crates (nice black giant milk crates) put the bulk bags of bulbs in the crates (2 varieties or more in each one), took the cardboard from shipping – stood that upright. Making signs for the each variety (laminated). Then, I made up price sheets for the varieties so if you only want a few of each kind you can do that. Hopefully this works??
